Jasper Mangel: It's like a reference desk at a library, i guess. A library reference desk is where librarians provide visitors with advice, information, and directions to locate library materials. Essentially, you can them where to find certain books, or ask them for information and they may look it up for you. That's what the Wikipedia Reference Desk does: people ask questions, and they get answers.
Rosio Pasculli: In the early days of Wikipedia a momentous meeting was held at Wikipedia HQ to try to determine what the Reference desk section should be called. After an exhaustive 18-month deliberation by hundreds of the finest Wikipedia minds (and a total cost rumoured to be in the tens of thousands of pounds-range) it was decided it should be called the Reference desk.
