why does tivo need a phone or wireless connection ?

Rachell Meese: the phone line is too report your pay per views and updates, the receiver calls a computer and adds yor pay per views too your bill. if it is not hooked up your card will fill up and not let you order and when you turn your equipment in they will send you a huge bill. the wireless telephone jack you are talking about can be bought at walmart.

May Stands: A standalone Series 2 or 3/HD TiVo can connect to an ethernet or wireless home network. For wireless, you should get the TiVo brand adapter, as it works best and is the only supported adapter that is readily available. Series 1s need a network card added to connect with ethernet to your router or a wireless bridge.

Lawana Neemann: So they can keep tack of the programs you watch,and to assure you don't alter the access card for free programing.It will work without the line attached though.Pisses em off,but it will still allow you to watch programing you just can't buy movies or any pay per views!

Clement Viscarro: The tivo needs a phone or network/wireless connection to download the guide information. When the tivo downloads it gets 14 days of info at a time, so if you are using a phone line and don't have a phone jack in the area, you can use the long phone cord that came with the unit and leave it plugged in over night every two weeks (the tivo will tell you when it is running low on guide information). If your Tivo is connected to a wireless network you can also listen to internet radio stations from live365 as well as music and photos from other computers on your network. With the network connection, you can also download recorded shows from your tivo to your computer or laptop to take with you. Once they are your computer, the shows can also be put on a psp or ipod, but there is an extra cost for this ability.The Dual tuner tivo and the new series three tivo still require a phone or network connection for guide data as described above.
