Lawana Neemann: Even a Mac can get a virus, but it is a bit less likely. As long as you run with a low privilege account, neither Windows or OSx should be infected. The problem with Windows though is that until recently, many applications required administrative privileges to run. As an example, the game Battlefield 1942 required several administrative privileges to ensure online game play didn't have any hacked code. Because of this, the account playing the game would either need to be admin or the application would run as admin. Any application connecting to external sources or running untrusted code is subject to a virus. Non-Microsoft operating systems tended to run with lower privileges by default where Microsoft historically did it opposite.I'd suggest at least running anti-virus and scheduling a regular system scan on your Mac. Hopefully you never see a virus, but it is much safer to be cautious now rather than after an infection. My employer runs McAfee on! our UNIX based systems, even though we have never had an infection there. Just because we haven't had one, doesn't mean that we won't ever see one.

Samara Siewers: One of the biggest reasons that Linux and Mac is more secure than Windows is the users power. By default, in Windows, a user is Administrator; they have the power to add, remove, and modify the system. In both Linux and Mac, a user does not have Root (Administrative) powers. To modify, install, or remove anything in the main system, the user must either login as root or use sudo commands, both of which require a password; this makes it very difficult to create malware/viruses for Linux and Mac; they cannot install themselves into the system without the users permission. To my knowledge the only security that Apple gives Mac users is a Firewall; regardless of the operating system, the minimal security measure everyone must have is a Firewall....Show more

Elaina Adolfson: I tend to use Sophos these days - yes it costs money but all the free systems are defective in one way or another - it is a fact of life that AV software needs regular maintenance and that costs money. Added to that many of the free AV tools you see on the newt are nothing of the sort but actually trojans. There are places where it is easy to justify spending money for performance, convenience and reliability and this is one of themAdditionally, always be very dubious of any advice to install more than one solution. AV suites are well known for interacting badly with each other. Install one and forget about the others. Windows AV is enough of a performance drain in the first place without various products competing with each other....Show more

Marylee Lucks: sure and no. sure: The Mac OS is extra look after than dwelling house windows, and hackers have not concentrated Mac through fact it particularly is much less common. No: Mac vendors many times say "i've got by no ca! pacity had a plague and that i do no longer even have an anti-virus software". So how do they be conscious of they have by no capacity had a plague? whilst some hacker focuses an internet malicious program on Macs it particularly is going to unfold like wildfire through fact so few Macs have virus risk-free practices or firewalls.
Lawanna Livsey: AVG 8.5, Sophos or Metacafe
Shelley Stevens: theres something like 10 PC's to every mac, that means the people who make the viruses, are more likely to do it on PC for a larger profit.
Renato Abatiell: There are tons of malware written for windows based pc. Not many for a mac. They say that Mac are just as vulnerable as a windows pc. May be that's true in lab tests and things like that. But in the real world, Mac's just don't get infected very much. To get infected on a Mac you have to download a infected program open it and install it to get infected. All a users has to do is not download from untrusted sites. No! w lets look at a Windows OS. No firewall you can get infected just by t! urning on your computer. Lets not even go into the fact if you are using a wifi spot what can happen on a windows based pc. Go online just going to a web page that has been hacked, can get you infected, You don't even have to click on anything (drive By attack)Download an infected file, you don't even have to open it, they will open as soon as they are done downloading. Just these facts alone make a Mac much more secure than a windows pc. My aunt just got a Mac a few months ago, ask me want security software to put on it. I told her she did not need anything. I would never tell anyone to not put anything on a windows pc. So Malware can't easily get on a Mac. Evern if it could there isn't much out there to infect a Mac. So how can anyone say the mac is not more secure? It's not a little more secure It's very secure. Now if everyone went to a Mac, then that would be the test, because the crooks would go after the Mac OS. I'm betting it would then be a lot less secure. But at ! this time as you know, you don't even need to have anti-virus software on a Mac.
Miguel Densley: i use norton! its very thorough! it gets a little annoying sometimes, because it's constantly scanning everything for viruses, but i know it works, and they take their job very seriously! like if you have a virus already on your computer then it will quarantine it for you so it doesn't spread to other programs!
