Boyce Gilhooly: I don't know how it is in the UK but here in California your name must be on the car title and you must be the current registered owner or you can't sell the car. I'm assuming it can't be much different in the UK. If you try and sell a car that is not registered to you or titled to you it's considered theft since you would be selling something that doesn't lawfully belong to you.In your case that sounds like something that should be dealt with in a civil court. Cause otherwise he's selling something that doesn't belong to him and that could ! hurt him way more than it could hurt you.I could be wrong though, I mean, I'm not a lawyer :PEdit: A "mechanic's lien" doesn't just give the mechanic a right to sell the car just because there is a payment issue. There's all kinds of different circumstances and situations that would effect how the situation is handled, some situations even being that a mechanic would be in the wrong to hold a car until payment is made.The only way for him to legally sell the car would be to take this in front of a court and prove that payments weren't made when they should have been and that the work and payment options that were made were agree'd upon by BOTH the mechanic and customer and that the customer failed to deliver on their end of the agreement.
